Purpose, within reach

A person's ability to learn, create, or help their community should have room to grow, whatever resources they start with. People doing valuable work in classrooms, research, local communities, and care for the environment deserve tools they can understand, adapt, and carry forward.

Why foundations

Much of what makes technology dependable happens beneath the surface. People may never see the layers that protect their work, manage resources, or keep a system behaving as expected. They live with the consequences when those layers fail.

A tree's roots grow out of sight. Long before there is fruit to share, they help it stand through wind and drought. The more technology depends on a layer, the more carefully that layer needs to be understood, tested, and maintained.

How we approach the work

  • Evidence before assertion — determinism, provenance and machine-checked claims, wherever a tool can do the checking.
  • Security by design — least privilege, explicit boundaries, components that can be inspected.
  • Reliability first — correctness, testing and debuggability are features, not chores.
  • Honest about state — we distinguish maturity, distribution, and current evidence, and use the site's status vocabulary for each recorded state. We do not publish dates we cannot keep.
  • Community ownership — open code and decisions are the direction; each current access boundary is stated as it exists today.

Why begin now

There is no single moment when this work becomes easy or convenient. Beginning now means building the capacity patiently and sharing useful progress as it becomes ready. It is a commitment to sustained work, not a claim of a finished stack or a promise of a release date.

How Magogi began

Magogi began with the conviction that dependable technology and useful knowledge should be within reach of people and communities with fewer resources. That purpose led to the work beneath the surface: design choices that determine whether a system remains understandable and dependable years later.

Careful foundations give people more freedom to teach, discover, create, and care for their world. The long-term direction is community-owned, open-source technology that people can learn from, help maintain, and build beyond.

How Magogi is organised

Three names, three different things.

Magogi, Magogi Community and Magogi Foundation name three different things, and this is the one page that tells the whole organisation story.

Community · Foundation · Projects

One mission, with the responsibilities kept apart.

Magogi Community

Magogi Community is the governance umbrella for contributors and decisions.

Collaboration, review, and contributor participation. The community page says which routes exist today and which arrangements are still being completed.

Magogi Foundation

The Washington nonprofit that holds what has to outlast any one contributor — funds, infrastructure, trademarks, signing-key custody, and the records.

It carries legal and fiscal stewardship for the work. Federal 501(c)(3) recognition is pending, and Form 1023 has not yet been filed.

The legal record →

Projects

The technical work itself: the mgf-* engineering family and the endorsed sooth systems-software family, each under its own standard.

sooth shipped code takes no dependency on the Magogi libraries, and the Magogi libraries take none on sooth. Selected MGF Python development tooling is permitted outside the sooth shipped trust and provenance boundary; lessons that travel between the families keep their attribution.

The work

Two bodies of work, each with its own engineering standard.

The mgf-* federation is 55 registered projects across 7 groupings, governed by mgf-standard with validation suited to each project's language and conformance level. mgf-common is the cornerstone. The Magogi libraries are in active development: registered, versioned, depended on across the fleet, and installable from the Foundation's own package index, which is open to anyone. Their source repositories are not anonymously accessible.

recorded at build

The long-term systems work lives under the endorsed sooth family — 10 members in its own registry, including the Soothfast kernel. Its own engineering standard follows the kernel's laws; it does not inherit the mgf-* validation suite. sooth is in active development and developed privately. A private hosted v0.9.0 kernel release exists; it is not a public operating-system download. Real hardware and real mesh transport remain deferred, and public distribution is a separate milestone.

The full catalogue, cluster by cluster, is on the work.

  • The story: mgf-brand@f6bd9b8, reviewed 2026-09-13. The editorial source records purpose and narrative; it does not establish impact results, staffing, or a new governance mechanism.
  • The family boundary: sooth-standard@49b27c7, reviewed 2026-09-13. The written boundary and dependency register do not establish that every specified gate currently runs or that every repository is conformant.
  • Source access: mgf-website@adc02b1, reviewed 2026-09-13. Anonymous 404 responses establish the measured access boundary at the review time; they do not identify the server rule, make the metadata fields equivalent to anonymous access, or guarantee future access state.

Common misconceptions

What Magogi is not.

Not a company, not a Linux distribution, not an artificial-intelligence product, not a complete operating system, and not tied to one processor architecture.

Not a company

Community-owned and open source. Magogi Foundation is a nonprofit steward, not a startup.

Not a Linux distribution

Soothfast is a kernel written from scratch — not a re-spin of an existing system.

Not an artificial-intelligence product

Artificial intelligence appears where it improves safety and observability, and the estate records where models co-wrote the work.

Not a complete operating system

sooth is in active development and developed privately. A private hosted v0.9.0 kernel release exists; it is not a public operating-system download. Real hardware and real mesh transport remain deferred, and public distribution is a separate milestone.

Honest about state

Nothing on this page is a promise about a date. Federal 501(c)(3) recognition is pending, and the application has not yet been filed. The libraries are registered, versioned and depended on across the fleet, and they install from the Foundation's own package index, which is open to anyone. Their source repositories are not anonymously accessible. The single record of what exists today lives on one page, and every other page summarises it.
